Adult Relationship

You wouldn’t let me pick you up

and carry you to my bed on Valentine’s Day.

Whenever you walked through the front door,

and I tried to spin you around with a hug,

you struggled right out of my arms.

You got angry when I tickled you.

You warned me against splashing you on the beach.

You scoffed almost every time I admired your beauty.

You sat quietly and alone at parties

if you came at all.

You wouldn’t let me take pictures of you.

If I gave you too many goodbye kisses,

you’d say, “Ok, that’s enough.”

You always fell asleep right after sex.

You always fell asleep as soon as you got on the couch.

You always fell asleep.

When I watch cartoons, I think of you.

But not because of anything we shared.

I think of you,

because of all the fun we never shared.

You weren’t allowed to watch cartoons as a kid.

I think that says a lot.

So now I’m wondering

why I ever loved you.
